Celiac disease (CD) and obesity can go hand-in-hand.

The relationship is complex, yet undeniable. When the body is unable to absorb nutrients properly, as in untreated CD, there is a constant state of depletion of essential nutrients. As a result, the body attempts to retain as many calories as possible from the foods eaten to satisfy its nutritional needs.

Even after going on a gluten free diet as treatment for CD, unwanted pounds can linger and even mount up.

Whatever the cause of your extra weight, exercise and smart food choices have a great impact when it comes to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. But sometimes we need a little more. That’s why I’m sharing my foodie secret for weight loss with you!

Eat This Super Food Appetizer and You WILL Lose Weight!

It's true and it's been scientifically proven!

Researchers at Scripps Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center discovered amazing weight loss in adults who ate half of a grapefruit before each meal. That’s right! By adding one-half a grapefruit to their diet and changing nothing else at all, study participants lost an average of 4 pounds over 12 weeks. Some individuals lost as much as 10 pounds! That’s what I call results!

Scientists say the reason this citrus appetizer can help you shed pounds has to do with grapefruit’s effect on insulin. Certain chemicals that naturally exist in the grapefruit lower insulin levels. This helps the body more efficiently regulate the breakdown of fat in the body, resulting in weight loss.

This tart citrus also contains tons of vital nutrients like vitamins C, A, and B5, as well as folate, potassium, and fiber! What’s even better is that grapefruit is extremely low in calories (one grapefruit half has a mere 36 calories!) and can aid in weight loss.

Keep in mind fresh seasonal fruits and veggies provide the best in flavor, nutrition, and affordability. Grapefruit is best between late-fall and spring, when it's in season. Of course, you can get it year-round... and you should! Grapefruit is a fantastic super food!

By making a simple choice we can make it even better...

Stay Pretty in Pink for Even More Health Benefits!

Pink grapefruit has an even greater impact on our health. This rosy fruit is not only good for weight loss, it's a super source of lycopene. The big hint the lycopene is in there is the fact the pink grapefruit is pink in the first place. Lycopene is the nutrient that gives certain fruits and veggies their red or rosy color. Tomatoes are a terrific source of lycopene too.

Lycopene is special because it has a sustained antioxidant action in the body. Remember, antioxidants are chemicals in the foods we eat that can protect our cells.

Quick & Easy “No Cook” Ways to Add Grapefruit to Your Special Diet

- Substitute grapefruit juice for the vinegar called for in your favorite vinaigrette!

- Toss grapefruit sections with a drizzle of honey and add to a bed of fresh baby spinach leaves for a healthy salad!

- Toss grapefruit sections with avocado cubes, sea salt and black pepper for a quick refreshing side dish!

Grapefruit is a great source of tangy flavor for just about anything! Be adventurous and give any ideas you have a try. If you think of something and want to run it by me, I'd love to hear from you!

This Week’s Trivia Question... Answered!

The Question: Which seasonal citrus is better for you when you choose it “pretty in pink”?

The Answer: Grapefruit! Choosing pink grapefruit varieties like Ruby and Redblush, we get much more than grapefruit’s weight loss effects. We benefit from the protective qualities of the antioxidant lycopene, too! Try adding a grapefruit half or two to your meals this week and see what you think!
