We’ve discussed the link between Celiac disease and obesity, and we all know that even after adhering to a gluten free diet, unwanted pounds can linger.
During my raw foods demo and nutrition talk last Saturday at the Atlanta Gluten Intolerance Group’s Gluten Free Vendor Fair I was not at all surprised to see emphatic nods throughout the audience when I mentioned this.
Carrying a few extra (unwanted) pounds is common, and regardless of the cause of your extra weight, exercise and smart food choices are certainly the best place to begin. It is undeniable both are necessary to healthy weight loss and maintenance. Sometimes, though, we need a little extra help. This week, as we learn even more secrets about more all-natural, gluten free Superfoods that can help us drop pounds, I’m spicing things up a bit!
That’s easy this time of year because holiday baking just doesn’t seem complete without adding cinnamon to dishes like Cinnamon Muffins, Pumpkin Custard, and Cinnamon Shortbread. You’ll be able to find delicious seasonal recipes like these in my upcoming Gluten Free Gigi Holiday Guide 2011! I can’t wait to share it with you! But for now, let’s find out exactly how cinnamon can help us lose weight. The concept is really...
NEAT calories burned also include those used to maintain our normal bodily functions, like heartbeat, breathing, and the millions of biochemical reactions going on inside us all the time. We also call this burning of calories for body maintenance metabolism. We’ve all heard the term. As we age, we say our metabolism slows down (true!). What that means is that our bodies aren’t burning as many calories as it once did.
That’s where cinnamon can help!
This potent spice contains certain substances that increase metabolism, which means we burn more calories after consuming cinnamon. Research shows as little as one-half teaspoon of cinnamon each day is enough to fuel the metabolic fires and boost our calorie burn enough for weight loss!
As you know, using more calories than we take in is the key to losing weight, so increasing metabolism is always helpful for controlling your weight!

A Note about potential cinnamon toxicity for certain individuals:
In some cases, there may be drug interaction or toxicity potential when consuming cinnamon. Always consult your physician before adding new foods to your diet. I find this link from the National Institutes of Health helpful in explaining potential cinnamon interactions and toxicities.
