How to Toast Sunflower Seeds

 How to Toast Sunflower Seeds is an essential cooking how-to that can be applied to similar ingredients, too! Use this technique for toasting nuts and other seeds like pecans, chopped walnuts or pumpkin seeds.

How to Toast Sunflower Seeds

In a dry skillet over medium heat (not medium-high… that’s too hot!), pour a single layer of raw sunflower seeds.

Heat 30-45 seconds, then stir.

Continue to stir every 15-20 seconds for 1-2 minutes, until the seeds become aromatic.

You will hear them sizzle a bit, and the color will begin to darken slightly to a light golden brown.

This is how you know your seeds are ready.

Remove from heat and pour from hot skillet onto a large plate or platter in a single layer to cool completely before storing or using in a recipe.

  • Apply the same method of How to Toast Sunflower Seeds in a dry skillet to other foods, too. Try nuts, seeds, whole seed spices (cumin, fennel ) and coconut. Note foods like coconut can burn very quickly, so should be monitored closely. It will take less time to toast coconut than nuts or seeds. Smaller seeds, like sesame seeds, toast quickly, so keep an eye on those, too!
