This post is sponsored by WESTLAB in conjunction with Women’s Health Magazine. I’m happy to be a Women’s Health Action Hero for a second year (2016 & 2017). It’s a great opportunity to partner with wellness-minded companies like WESTLAB. As always, I only share about products I believe in, use myself and feel you will benefit from knowing about, too.
When it comes to health and nutrition, salt is a popular topic. Typically, we discuss salt in terms of dietary sodium, specifically how much and what type is considered “safe” for the body. WESTLAB provides pure Himalayan culinary salt, too; however, today, I want to talk about salt differently – in terms of how it benefits the outside of our bodies.
Skin health ranks high in my holistic approach to wellness. After all, our skin is our largest organ and it’s exposed to all the elements and environmental toxins we encounter daily. In addition to regular therapeutic massage and various facial treatments, I revitalize my skin at home with salts and mud from the Dead Sea.
Dead Sea Salt Gives Skin Life
Lately I’m using Dead Sea salt and mud products, as well as Himalayan salt, from WESTLAB. They offer pure mineral salt and products that are widely available (Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Shop Rite, etc.) and very budget-friendly (example: 2.2 pound bag of Dead Sea Salt at Wal-Mart under $4).
A few of my current favorites from WESTLAB are:
Dead Sea Mud – a purifying body mask that is 100% Dead Sea Mud and nothing else. Because Dead Sea Mud is naturally rich in magnesium, calcium and potassium, it is soothing to skin as well as to achy joints and muscles.
Dead Sea Salt – a terrific mid-week rejuvenator, pure Dead Sea Salt makes a wonderful body soak or foot soak. If you stand on your feet for hours at a time, a Dead Sea Salt foot bath is something you must add to your weekly health regimen!
Himalayan Salt – another great product for soaking, Himalayan Salt is a wonderful detox for your skin. More than 80 minerals smooth, detoxify and replenish tired skin with one or two soaks per week.
Geography Refresh: Where and What is the Dead Sea?
It’s important to know the sourcing of any product you use on your body. Always do your homework to make sure you get pure products, carefully sourced and minimally processed.
WESTLAB takes the worry out of all of the above because all their Dead Sea products are directly sourced and nothing is added.
The Dead Sea is a large salt lake bordered by Jordan, Israel and Palestine. It also happens to be the lowest elevation on Earth (about 1500 feet below sea level). The Dead Sea itself is about 1000 feet deep and at approximately 10 times saltier than the ocean, it’s the saltiest body of water on the planet.
So, we know it’s low and it’s salty, but what’s so special about the Dead Sea?
Scientists believe the answer has a lot to do with the water’s extremely high concentration of minerals like magnesium, sodium, phosphates and bromides. In fact, research shows the high magnesium concentration in Dead Sea Salt and Mud improves skin barrier function, reduces inflammation and reduces skin redness and roughness.
Additional research indicates the black mineral-rich mud from the Dead Sea is also shown to have antimicrobial properties, which are beneficial to individuals with skin issues like severe acne and psoriasis.
An overall (and overwhelming) general benefit is that Dead Sea minerals aid skin in holding hydration. This gives a firming and plumping effect. Used regularly, this translates into a younger, more vibrant look. Think of soaking in a salt bath and coming out with no crepey skin. (If you’re not sure what that is, you’re probably under 50. You can read about it here.)
Now, as much as I travel, even I can’t make it to the Dead Sea often enough to reap regular therapeutic benefits from its properties. That’s where WESTLAB products come into play. There are lots of products on the market that contain Dead Sea mud or salt, but what I like about WESTLAB products is that I know there’s nothing added, just pure, minimally processed Dead Sea mud or salt (depending on the product I’m using) and that’s it. And that’s the secret to reaping the benefits of Dead Sea mud and salts – the products you use must be pure.
My Favorite Ways to Use Dead Sea Salt and Mud
- Body soak in the tub
- Full body mud mask
- Concentrated salt foot soak
Walking is my primary mode of getting everywhere and my favorite form of exercise, so my feet need extra attention and care. I use this soak to keep my feet feeling and looking fabulous all the time!
How to Make a Dead Sea Salt Foot Soak
- Dissolve ½ – 2 cups of salt in a warm 5 liter foot bath of approx 98.6°F (37°C). (I usually use about 1 cup of salt.)
- Relax and soak feet up to 20 minutes.
- Refreshing with additional warm water if needed for a longer soak.
- Towel dry feet and apply lotion or moisturizer of choice.
