One of my punch bowls occupies a considerable amount of space in the antique sideboard that houses a great many of my platters, bowls, trays and table linens. Yes, one of them. Confession: I have 3 punch bowls. Why? How? In my defense, I didn’t purchase any of them. The first, a gift from a dear aunt when I first married. Every lady needs a proper punch bowl and cups for entertaining. ‘Tis true. I remember opening the big cardboard box it was in and squealing with delight! My first punch bowl! I know, it doesn’t take much, does it?
Another was handed off to me from a friend who was moving cross-country and (gasp!) didn’t need her punch bowl anymore. I still can’t understand this, but I accepted gratefully and still wonder to this day if she’s going to realize the error of her ways and call for me to ship the deeply cut crystal bowl, ladle and tiny cups to her. After 11 years, I’m guessing she’s moved on.
And finally, there’s the “Big Guy”, a monster of a punch bowl that I think will only really be appropriate when one of the girls gets married. (Although I have used it for a holiday party, but it’s simply too big for your everyday bowl of punch.) It was given to me by yet another aunt, handed over almost reluctantly, and understandably so. It is an antique beauty! Wedding worthy, I tell you.
Truthfully, it is not the bowl so much as the punch in the bowl that I love. Growing up, it was always “green punch”. Do you remember the one with lime Jell-O, pineapple juice and ginger ale? Oh, it was so good. But Jell-O. Eek. These days, I don’t feel great about serving or consuming boxed gelatin because of some of the ingredients inside. But that doesn’t have to mean no punch. Just better-for-you punch.
I love experimenting with organic fresh pressed juices, then adding a bit of something carbonated – all-natural homemade ginger ale (I know, who really have time for this, but it is incredible!), San Pelligrino, etc. This punch reminds me of the green stuff I loved as a kiddo. It’s that pineapple/ginger ale combo that does it for me, I think.
Here, for a change, I use pure blueberry juice… you should try it! It reminds me at first sip of concord grape juice, but then a decidedly blueberry flavor comes through just before a tart finish. Delish! And using organic fresh pressed juices (either those you juice yourself or those you buy) makes enjoying punch on occasion totally acceptable.
Oh, and if you don’t keep a punch bowl handy, no worries! Simply mix this refreshing quaff right in your favorite pitcher, just remember to give it a stir after it sits in the fridge for a bit, as the juices do tend to settle.
Fresh Pressed Pineapple Blueberry Punch
- 3 cups organic fresh pressed pineapple juice
- 1 ½ cups organic fresh pressed blueberry juice
- 3 cups all-natural ginger ale, or other carbonated beverage (even Perrier or San Pelligrino work well in this punch)
- Combine juices in a large pitcher, add ginger ale and gently stir.
- Serve over ice, topped with a few frozen organic blueberries, if you like.
- Chill remaining punch and stir gently before serving.
- Makes about ½ gallon punch.
