Holiday parties my parents threw or attended when I was growing up inspired me to entertain. Lush platters brimming with dainty appetizers mesmerized me! Treats spread out like a feast made me wish every day was a holiday. Some day I’ll throw parties with fancy food just like this. At the time, I had no idea food would become my (second) career, but I’m glad it did. Now, I can share tasty creations like these Roasted Grapes and Cracked Pepper Chèvre Appetizers with you.
One tidbit I also like sharing is how easy and delicious gluten-free food can be. For example, these appetizers are elegant on a serving tray, but are so simple to put together. Using a few key ingredients that complement each other well is one secret to success when creating appetizers your guests will love.
Another tip for success is using the proper base for your creation. It’s like a flavor launchpad for your recipes. I like Glutino Original Gluten Free Crackers as a base for so many reasons.
An Ideal Base is a Flavor Launchpad!
First, the texture of these crackers is just right – not too hard so that guests can’t bit through them, but definitely firm enough to stand up to hearty toppings.
Second, these crackers do not crumble when you bit into them. No one wants a shower of crumbs on their holiday finery, right?
And finally – the best part – these crackers aren’t too salty like so many are. I season my dishes in layers, paying attention to each element, so when it comes to a recipe like these Roasted Grapes and Cracked Pepper Chèvre Appetizers, I look for a base off of which I can launch those flavor combinations I created. An overly salty cracker changes the flavor profile, which I don’t want.
Another plus with Glutino crackers is they are packaged in two bags inside the box, so if you only need a few, half of the box can remain sealed for freshness until you’re ready for them.
Think of these crackers as your canvas and the toppings as your creation! And speaking of the creation, it’s so easy to make a batch of these apps for your next holiday cocktail party. Roast the grapes to bring out their natural sweetness, stir fresh cracked black pepper into softened goat cheese and you’re all set! Simple ingredients, simple method and the perfect base for topping is all you need.
Roasted Grapes and Cracked Pepper Chèvre Appetizer
1 ½ cups seedless black or red grapes, stems removed, washed and dried
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 bay leaves
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
5 ounce log chèvre (goat cheese) at room temperature
1 box Glutino Original Gluten Free Crackers
Preheat your oven to 375F.
In a bowl, combine grapes, olive oil, bay leaves, salt and a pinch of the ½ teaspoon pepper, reserving the remaining pepper. Place the grapes on a sheet pan with sides and roast 25 minutes, or until tender and aromatic.
While the grapes roast, place the chèvre into a small bowl and stir in remaining black pepper. Set aside.
Once the grapes are roasted, transfer from the baking pan to a bowl. Discard bay leaves. Allow grapes to cool to room temperature before assembling appetizer.
To assemble, place Glutino Original Gluten Free Crackers on a serving platter, spread (or pipe) on some of the chevre to each cracker, then top with a spoon of the grapes. Repeat until the entire box of crackers is used.
Garnish with smoked or regular sea salt and rosemary sprigs, if desired.
Makes approximately 2 ½ dozen appetizers.
